2023 is the year in which Seiko celebrates the 110th anniversary of its first wristwatch with a series of commemorative creations. The first timepiece that pays homage to this important event is an unprecedented watch that draws inspiration from the iconic Laurel of 1913.
Seiko’s story began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori started a shop in Ginza for the sale and repair of watches. In 1892 he opened a factory called Seikosha to produce his own watches.

Twenty years later, when pocket watches were still the reference model, Hattori experimented with the creation of wristwatches, which at the time were regarded as the cutting edge of technology.
In 1913, his company produced Japan’s first wristwatch, the Laurel, the first of many innovations that have represented great advances in watchmaking over the years, including the first quartz wristwatch in 1969 and the innovative technology of Spring Drive in 1999.

The new watch reflects in every detail the shape and design of the Laurel. The round case is carefully constructed to maintain the elegance of the original; at the same time it houses a modern automatic movement.
The characteristic Arabic numerals, retro-style blued steel hands and a large onion crown are also faithfully recreated, in line with the nostalgic atmosphere of this special timepiece.
Just like the 1913 original, the new creation features a pure white enamel dial.
Its depth and beauty, as well as its vaunted appearance remained unchanged over time, are made possible thanks to the master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his colleagues in a laboratory specialized in the production of enamels.
The new Presage timepiece is powered by Seiko’s high-performance 6R27 caliber, with a power reserve indicator at nine o’clock and a small counter for the date at six o’clock. The “box-shaped” sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface that offers a high level of readability from any perspective you observe.
The new Presage “Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary”, made in a limited edition of 2,500 units, is available from January 2023 at all Seiko Boutiques and authorized retailers, and on the e-commerce website www.seikoboutique.it.
