Airain Watches

Airain was originally conceived by the illustrious Dodane family in 1934 and rose to fame for its trustworthy, high-quality timepieces. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Airain was one of the selected suppliers (along with Breguet and Dodane) of the Type 20 model for the French Army.

After reviving Airain’s original sister brand Lebois & Co in 2014 a French entrepreneur and watch aficionado owned also Airain, making this brand once again the sister brand of Lebois & Co, just as it was in 1934.

Today Airain has a new life. Starting with a new version of the higly sought after ‘Type 20’ Flyback Chronograph.

Now that we have the correct informations abut the brand, let’s discover his masterpiece, the Type 20 model!

Airain Type20 – the past and the future

First of all let me say that i never saw something interesting like this, we are talking about one of the coolest re-edition ever made for a chronopgraph.

Type 20 refers to a specification for pilot’s chronographs issued by the French Ministry of Defense.

The unique feature of the Type 20 was the ‘flyback’ function, which allows the pilot to easily reset the chronograph hand, and quickly start timing a new event without the lag in time of pushing two more buttons.

The vintage and original version of timepiece was a 38mm diameter and 14mm thick case, a black dial with luminescent indexes and hands, a self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of at least 35 hours.

Today the new version has 39,5mm stainless steel case is slightly bigger than the original to match modern standards without losing the allure of its famous ancestor.

The Type 20 Re-Edition is powered by Airain’s caliber AM1, developed and made by Manufacture La Joux- Perret S.A. in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

The new re-edition of the Type20

Its black dial, protected by a domed Hesalite crystal, has the same Arabic numerals as the original 1950’s Type 20, with a small seconds sub- dial at 9 o’clock and 30 minute recorder at 3 o’clock.

Hand-applied beige Super-LumiNova color has been carefully chosen to recall the original luminescent material of the original Type 20.

The new re-edition of the Type20

The Airain Type20 is available also with a very nice chocolate dial and straps and is limited to 134 pieces which refers to the founding year of Airain 1934.

Pay tribute to the armed forces and the red, white, and blue in your own way with our latest release “The Traveler”, this is a military-inspired pilot watch.

Jack Turner Watches Microbrand – a special pilot

The second hand of the traveller is perfect for precision timekeeping and the white Arabic numerals are easy to read.

Silent sweep movement guarantees that all you notice is the good looks and timekeeping properties of this handsome watch.

It is powered by the Seiko VH31 sweep second movement that was introduced in 2018.

This movement is unique because the sweeping hands beat four times per second creating the fluid appearance of an automatic watch but with quartz precision and reliability.

The black dial has two separate disks, one atop the other, that holds luminescent materials in the recessed indexes that show through the cutouts in the top layer thus creating the watch’s wonderful luminescence effect.

This clever sandwich effect is usually only seen on high-end divers watchers.

The bottom dial on The Traveler Watch has recessed numerals and indices while the top dial is carved out to reveal a beautiful green Super-LumiNova® coating which ensures the ability to see in the dark out in the field or anywhere that you happen to be.

Offering up to ten times more brightness than other zinc-based luminous phosphorescent material this technology is normally reserved for luxury watches at much higher price points.

You will also enjoy a sapphire glass crystal that contains 9 Mohs of mineral hardness which makes it resistant to scratches during normal use.

Of course, it is not impossible to scratch the crystal but it is very difficult although not impossible for scratches to result after rubbing up against a stone or concrete wall for example.

This watch is in limited supply, only 150 pieces of this watch will be produced pre-order. Order now to lock in the pre-order, discounted price.

Makina Watches Microbrand

If you are looking for a really cool dress watch Makina Watches is a great microbrand and their watches are a good choice for you!

Makina, which means “machine”, is a Manila micro brand that builds on the sportier side of dress watches.

From what I have seen, This brand is not one to build one homage piece after another.

They have a real focus on coming up with original designs.

None of the parts are stock parts but are entirely created and produced from scratch from case to dial to hands to crown.

makina watches dress watch

Having said that, they don’t try and achieve originality with gimmickry but instead with subtle design cues that challenge what a watch should look like and add a lot of character along the way.

Makina Watches – the elegance of the dress watch

Makina is like this because the founder, Danilo Villanueva, is a Creative Director by trade; He spent several years art directing and building campaigns in the advertising industry where, in 2017, he took a break to build what Makina Watches is today.

Housed in the brand’s most curvaceous case, Uriel III (above) is a modern take and tribute to an age-old tool watch used by doctors, the pulsometer watch. It features a unique stretched cushion case design.

Calamai Watches Microbrand

Here we are with a new review dedicated to Calamai Watches Microbrand.

This time we are talking for the first time about a pilot watch with some very unique features.

This watch is given to the Italian Air Force, so I am really proud to do this review.

Let’s start right away with the packaging, a comfortable leather travel case with the logo of an airplane forming the C of the founder of the brand, Francesco Calamai.

The watch in question is the G-50 arrow with a black dial and leather strap.

This timepiece features a 40mm diameter case and Sellita SW 580 top grade movement and 48 hour power reserve and screw down crown.

Calamai watches special materials

Among the features of this watch that impressed me the most are definitely the three-dimensionality of the dial and the material with which the case was produced.

The casing of each watch was forged by melting the steel of the G.E. turbine that powered an F-104 of the Italian Air Force. Indeed, the serial number of the exact turbine disc utilised is engraved on the caseback.

To reach the highest levels of precision, each casing is forged through lost-wax microfusion and then hand-finished.

The watch is really comfortable to wear on the wrist and is among my favorite pilot watches!

If you are looking for an italian microbrand and a really special pilot watch, Calamai watches are defenitely for you!

Here we are with the Milus Archimedes Watch Review!

Milus is a historic Swiss brand founded in 1919 and Archimèdes is the modern successor to their Super compressor model from the 1970s as well as the 666, the original model created a decade earlier.

This swiss made watch intrigued me from the beginning thanks to its design and its dial, simple, complete and compact.

Today I want to review it with you and I want to explain why I consider it one of the best choices for value for money.

First let’s start with the packaging, simple and minimal but at the same time useful. A comfortable leather travel case, containing watch and strap.

I really appreciated this choice because I have never loved bulky boxes that are always abandoned in the attic and I must say that many brands are moving towards this choice such as Oris with the mare nostrum model.

This watch is immediately ready to use, in fact, the strap is mountable through a button convenient and fast.

The case is brushed, with a diameter of 41 mm and a black dial and internal bidirectional rotating bezel.

Hhands are typical of vintage Milus 60s/70s “Broad Arrow” style and coated with SuperLuminova with excellent glow in the dark.

Milus Archimèdes – movement and features

This timepiece is powered by an ETA 2892A2 (TOP) movement with 42 hours of power reserve and is water resistant to 300 meters.

The crown is screw-down (as is the case back) while the crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective treatment.

In addition to all these features, the watch also has a helium valve, which I remember is used to allow the helium molecules to escape during immersion, avoiding creating any damage to the watch.

Conclusion

This watch is in my opinion a great choice mainly for 3 reasons and they are also the ones I evaluate every time I buy a watch:

History of the brand we are not talking about a brand born a few months ago but a historic watchmaker born in 1919 and has just turned 100 years old.

When you buy a watch we are not just buying a physical object but the price is also justified by the seriousness of the brand and the history behind it.

Quality of materials and movement. As soon as I wore the watch I immediately perceived the quality of the materials of which this timepiece is made, from the leather strap to the finishes of the case and dial, everything is in perfect harmony.

In addition, we are not talking about a basic movement but the choice of a TOP grade in my opinion justifies the price that I consider low.

milus archimedes review by mrwatch93

Price in my opinion consistent, under 2 thousand euros and in an affordable range. We can have a Swiss Made watch with a great movement at a reasonable price.

Today we finally review another Italian microbrand, vertigowatches !

I had the opportunity to get to know this brand live during Watches of Italy, the first Italian watch fair dedicated to Italian microbrands and I immediately perceived the potential of these timepieces.

Competitive price, vintage style, precision and comfort are the main features of this chronograph, the Vertigo Tornante.

I said vintage style because looking at the dial and especially at the back of the watch I immediately came to mind the cars and the odometer of the machines back to the 60s/70s.

The dial (protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal) is really beautiful and recalls the bright brown or sunburst, very evident especially in the presence of light.

In addition, the tachymeter scale is incorporated in the dial, although I prefer it external.

The back of the watch is characterized by the design of the rim of a racing car from the 60s.

The dimensions are 41 mm in diameter, lug to lug 47 mm and lug 22 mm.
